For the past few years, Breakthrough has organized a fall reception with the aim to increase awareness among friends who may not have known about Breakthrough’s two-part educational mission.  On October 8th, Vanessa and Eduardo Sanchez opened their beautiful home to approximately 50 new friends who mingled, enjoyed wine and light bites, and heard about Breakthrough’s life-changing impact from the teachers themselves.

Eduardo welcomed everyone and expressed his appreciation for educational programs like Breakthrough that prepare motivated, underserved students for college and that train and prepare talented young adults for teaching. Executive Director Kathy Heinzerling gave a brief overview of the organization’s mission, thanked everyone for attending, and introduced our teacher alumni to speak about their personal experiences with Breakthrough. Sarah Yockey, an architecture major at University of Houston, and Johnny Solis, a teacher at YES Prep, told guests about the significant moments with individual students that cemented their career decisions to join the education field. It was clear that their Breakthrough summers not only allowed them to be students and learn about the craft of teaching but also offer their students an unparalleled educational experience in and outside the classroom.

Many thanks to all who attended and supported us! Click here to see more event photos.
