Meet Londyn-Taylor Benjamin, well on her way to becoming a first-generation college student. Last July, Londyn-Taylor participated in Breakthrough’s Summer Program where hundreds of students gained an average equivalent of 4.8 months of learning in Reading and 9.6 months of learning in Math.

Last fall, Londyn-Taylor began 8th grade at Etoile Academy prepared academically and, as importantly, confident in her abilities and eager to share her newfound knowledge.

These profound academic gains have been easy to document. Harder to measure are the life-changing strides our students make in leadership ability, confidence, problem solving and a myriad of other skills honed through programs with a socioemotional learning (SEL)* focus.

We thank our supporters for providing educational opportunities that combat pandemic-related learning losses. Through community support, we build a stronger, more equitable Houston.

*Socioemotional Learning (SEL) brings measurable, lasting student gains, including increased school engagement and higher grades & test scores. Students with higher socio-emotional competence are more likely to attend college, succeed in careers and become engaged citizens. SEL as a Public Health Approach to Education: Mark T. Greenberg
