Volunteer to be a School Year Program Teacher
In the fall of each school year, we look for talented high school and college students in Houston to teach Project-Based Learning (PBL) Curriculum in STEM and Humanities during our School Year Program. Each teacher will be matched to one of our three sites: Connect Community, HISD, or St. John’s School. As a School Year Program teacher or teaching assistant volunteer, you work with an experienced instructional coach to deliver lessons on specified Saturday mornings.
Volunteer to be an Essay Coach
As a BTH Essay Coach, you will support academically motivated Houston area high school juniors and seniors work on their college essays. Though we have one annual Essay Writing Workshop in the spring, essay coaches can also remotely support students by providing feedback and positive motivation on essay drafts. Any person who feels they have strong writing skills or a passion to work on personal statements are strongly encouraged to apply.
Volunteer to be a Mentor
As a BTH mentor, you will provide invaluable advice and support to academically motivated Houston area high school students. We have several mentor/mentee planned activities, and we encourage you to be in touch with your mentee(s) throughout the year. Breakthrough students are paired with mentors by request, and all interested students must sign a commitment contract.
Get your Company Involved
For over a decade, Breakthrough Houston has held an annual field trip to expose students to a variety of career opportunities. Each year Summer Career Day is a huge hit, and we are so appreciative of the time and energy our sponsors dedicate to sharing their work and passions with our students. If you are interested in hosting groups of 5-8 students (along with 2-3 adult chaperones) for our next Summer Career Day, please contact us!
