Summer Teaching Fellows
Breakthrough Houston is looking for talented individuals who are interested in teaching high-achieving, motivated middle school students from underserved families in the Greater Houston area. As a Breakthrough Houston teacher, you will teach classes of approximately ten students, work with a qualified Instructional Coach to make sure you know the ropes, and experience what it is like to be at the front of a classroom.
Teachers have a primary teaching assignment in a core subject (math, science, literature, writing) plus additional elective and activity courses. There are many leadership opportunities including leading committees and groups of students known as families, serving as a department head, and coordinating program-wide initiatives as a member of AdCom.
This is one of the best ways to decide if teaching is for you! The Princeton Review has ranked Breakthrough as a Top Ten summer internship (along with working at the White House and working at MTV). Teach for America has noted that former Breakthrough teachers are accepted to TFA at a much higher rate than regular applicants. Breakthrough Teaching Fellows make friendships that will last a lifetime.
The 2023 base salary for a Breakthrough Houston summer teacher is $3,750 + a $1,700 AmeriCorps Education Award.
The 2023 term of service is from June 5, 2023 – August 3rd, 2023. A Breakthrough summer is an immersive, full-time experience.
If you don’t have a place to live in Houston, homestays are available upon request.
“I love working at Breakthrough. I’ve never had a harder summer, but I’ve also never gotten to see students learn to write before my eyes. Working in a classroom was energizing for me, and I know I want to do this for years to come.”
